Vancouver Island University

Vancouver Island University (abbreviated as VIU, formerly known as Malaspina University-College and before that as Malaspina College) is a Canadian public university serving Vancouver Island and coastal British Columbia. Starting as Malaspina College in 1969, it has grown into a university that plays an important role in the educational, cultural, and economic life of the region. The main campus is located in Nanaimo, and there are regional campuses in Duncan and Powell River, as well as a centre in Parksville.

At VIU, you matter, and you will find support every step of the way. Class sizes are small, so dedicated, talented faculty get to know you by name and provide attention and any help you need. We offer a broad network of student supports to make sure you’re set up for success even if things get tough. Along the way, you’ll learn how you can make a difference in your job, your community and maybe even the world. Find a program to match your interests as you prepare for a rewarding career and a fulfilling life.

Student Supports

As a VIU student, you’ll have access to many student services that are designed to help you reach your full academic and personal potential. These include access to academic advising, counselling services, a writing centre, career service, peer support and more.

Areas of Study

Pursue your passion for higher learning, in an environment that will support your personal and professional goals. Our programs offer next steps to your graduate education and career goals.

Educational Access

At VIU, students who face a barrier to getting a university credential will receive a personalized approach. We explore their challenge with them and work to help them overcome it. As the first university in BC to provide a full tuition waiver to former youth in the province’s care system, our caring faculty and staff strive to work with each student to help them identify their educational path and find success at their studies.

VIU's History

Every student becomes part of VIU’s history, which goes back to the institution’s roots in 1936, when we got our start as a vocational training centre. Through important transformations as Malaspina College, Malaspina University-College and the transition to becoming Vancouver Island University in April 2008, VIU shares a rich history and deep connection to the communities we serve.
